ABET Outcome J: The hGH Controversy
During my study abroad in China, my class was asked to research a modern topic regarding bioprocesses and present our findings to the class. My presenting group included one other American student and two Chinese students. The purpose of the project was to inform the audience not of the product itself, but of the process by which the product is made. By listening to the range of topics chosen by the class, I learned a lot about many of the typical ways that industry makes many products, such as beer, biodiesel, and human growth hormone.
One lesson that I learned during the project was that when presenting for a group of mixed cultures, a lot of the effort that I would normally spend on dense slides might go to waste if much of the audience has a difficult time deciphering between figures and wordy descriptions. In our slides, we used very simple bullet points and pictures to explain the key points, and we cut any extraneous material. As with many real-world problems, the simplest solution often turns out to work the best.
